Abstract
Paul Ricoeur reminds us that literature, after having restored to the collective memory a part of the forgetting — voluntary or not — must be interpreted and read. This is why the revision of historiographic texts requires an awareness of the selections, and therefore the delimitations that are made in the elaboration of historical discourse. What are the elements chosen to delimit and present African literatures? What narrative has been developed in order to construct a collective identity around the repertoire reinterpreted in literary histories? What critical and historical discourses are privileged in the teaching of African literatures in France? This article aims to analyse the historiographies of African literature in French published in the 1990s in order to present the imaginary communities constructed: how was Africa thought of?
