Abstract

Abstract We explore constraints on reciprocal scope, showing that properties of the local antecedent of the reciprocal are crucial in determining the scope of the reciprocal. We survey bound and non-bound, collective, controlled and distributive antecedents, examining and rejecting or refining some previously proposed constraints on reciprocal scope. We also discuss logophoric antecedents, which to our knowledge have not figured in the literature up to now. Our findings provide overall support for a relational (rather than quantificational) treatment of reciprocal semantics.
