Abstract
We examine the spontaneous breakdown of flavorSU(3) symmetry in a most general form of the theory which admits the maximal breaking patternSU(3)→u3(1)×U8(1). From an investigation of the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in QCD, we conclude that the dynamical breakdown of global flavor symmetry does not occur, thus reiterating an assertion of Vafa and Witten.
