Abstract

AbstractA critical summary of the available knowledge on the constitutions ofa number of potentially important magnesium-based alloy systems is presented. After an initial section outlining the effects of certain addition elements on-the technological properties of magnesium, new constitutional information is presented for ternary systems containing rare-earth metals. A description is given of the phase diagrams for magnesium-rich magnesium-cerium alloys with ternary additions of aluminium, lanthanum, manganese, or silicon. This section also includes magnesium-neodymium alloys with additions of manganese, nickel, yttrium, or zinc, and magnesium -rich alloys with yttrium and manganese or zinc. Consideration of these diagrams allows a discussion of the complex quaternary systems Mg-Ce-Co-Mn, Mg-Nd-Y-Zn, and Mg-Mn-Nd-Ni. Ternary -and more complex magnesium alloys containing thorium with manganese, zinc, or zirconium, and zirconium with aluminium, lithium, or zinc are discussed in the following section. Other...
