Abstract
To the Editor: —In the December issue of Hygeia there appears an article on constipation by Dr. Walter Alvarez. deductions arrived at in this article are based on the results of a study made on a number of young, apparently normal persons by Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Freedlander, who published their observations inThe Journal, August 23. In a communication toThe Journal, September 20, Dr. Morris I. Bierman stated that Alvarez's work on The Rate of Progress of Food Residues Through the Bowel was based on an erroneous statement of fact, and attempted to prove this by citing his own roentgenologic observations. Dr. Alvarez's reply to this was published in the same issue. October 18, Dr. W. H. Hay of Buffalo, in a communication toThe Journal, objected to Alvarez's statements as being misleading, and feared that their acceptance by physicians would result in great harm being done
