Abstract
This study delves into the intricate phonological transformations that transpire when Hindi-Urdu loanwords are integrated into the English lexicon. Through a meticulous curation and analysis of a corpus comprising Hindi-Urdu loanwords in English, this research scrutinizes the nuanced consonantal changes that arise from the linguistic exchange between these languages. With a particular focus on the interplay between Hindi-Urdu consonantal sounds and English phonological structures, the study examines processes such as deaspiration, deretroflexion, and deuvularization, and other relevant phonetic adjustments to provide a comprehensive insight into how Standard English phonological norms impact the interpretation and articulation of Hindi-Urdu consonants within loanwords.
