Abstract

Abstract This article examines the arguments presented by those dissidents within the Conservative Party who reject the prevailing pro‐devolution policy towards Northern Ireland and locates those members of the parliamentary party on the ideological spectrum of contemporary Conservatism. The limited impact of this grouping is assessed and the argument that the ‘grassroots’ of the Party is more sympathetic to integrationism and the Union than either Conservative MPs or Party supporters is presented. It is argued that developments since the Downing Street Declaration mean that the integrationist lobby is unlikely to alter the path of government policy.
