Pros Sem Nas Masy Biodiv Indon 4: 261-265.Center for Plant Conservation Botanic Gardens, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (PKT KR-LIPI), known as Bogor Botanic Gardens, is one of the centers for ex-situ plant conservation that has conserved Indonesian flora. One of the most interesting orchid species is Grammatophyllum speciosum Blume or known as sugar cane orchid. This species listed in Government Regulation Number. 7 of 1999 on Preservation of Plants and Animals. The giant size of the plant and inflorescence and beautiful flower made the species threaten in its natural habitat. Conservation effort has been done though, both ex vitro and in vitro as well as its utilization. The plants collected from Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, dan Papua. In vitro propagation has been conducted using seed from plant collection and small part of propagation product commercialized at Garden Shop in order to disseminate and educate the society about orchid diversity and the importance of ex situ conservation. Synthetic seed technology also applied using protocorm as propagule for short-mid term preservation of the temperature of 4 dan 25°C.
