Abstract

Partially due to its simplicity, informed consent is arguably one of the more underappreciated aspects of penile prosthesis (PP) surgery. However, despite its simplicity, the consent process represents a critical aspect of all surgical procedures, particularly elective cases. One suboptimal example helps to highlight the importance of appropriate consent. Several years back, a patient seen in our clinic for Peyronie’s disease was ultimately recommended to undergo incision and grafting. The morning of the surgery, his information was reviewed, at which point an error in judgment on my part was recognized, and the patient was considered to be a better candidate for placement of a PP.
