Abstract
This paper has been extracted from the literature review of research undertaken to examine the role of health visitors in the comprehensive assessment process in child protection. The paper outlines the historical development of knowledge about child abuse and will put in context the procedures which have evolved to aid professional work in child protection. The principles underpinning multi-disciplinary or multi-agency working are that individual team members should share common aims and goals. The degree to which the aims and goals are fulfilled may be reflected in the perceived achievements of individual members. This paper will explore the elements required for good working relationships and the practical and professional issues which enhance or inhibit the achievement of effective multi-disciplinary working.
