Event Abstract Back to Event Connections of the ventrobasal forebrain in the domestic chick (Gallus domesticus) Eszter Bálint1* and Andras Csillag1 1 Department of Anatomy, Semmelweis University, Hungary The ventrobasal forebrain of the avian brain includes the olfactory tubercle (TO). Recent investigation has indicated greater behavioural significance of this region even in microsmatic avian species. The pathway tracer Fast Blue was injected in six two-week-old chicks and the retrogradely labelled cell bodies were detected and charted using confocal laser scanning fluorescent microscopy. Telencephalic sources of TO projections were found in several arcopallial divisions (representing parts of the avian amygdala), nucleus accumbens, medial striatum (MSt), ventral pallidum (VP), hippocampus, hyperpallium apicale, lateral septum, temporoparietal cortex and piriform cortex. Diencephalic projections arose from the nucleus dorsomedialis anterior (DMA) and nucleus dorsolateralis anterior (DLA) of thalamus and the lateral hypothalamus (LHy). In the mesencephalon, labelled cells were abundant in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus interpeduncularis and periaqueductal gray (PAG). In the rest of the brainstem, the most prominent accumulation of labelled cells was observed in the locus coeruleus (LoC). In certain cases, anterograde tracer (biotinylated dextrane amine) injections were deposited in the TO/ventral striatal border region. In the telencephalon, labelled fibers were abundant in the MSt, hyperpallium densocellulare, VP, mesopallium and in the nucleus taeniae amygdalopallii. In the diencephalon, high amount of labelled fibers were found in the LHy, paraventricular nucleus and DLA. In the midbrain, the bulk of fibers were found in the VTA, nucleus papillioformis, substantia nigra and PAG. In the rest of the brainstem, the most prominent accumulation of labelled fibers were found in the LoC, subcoeruleus nuclei and the raphe.
