Abstract

This study investigates connectedness with parents and behavioural autonomy in a sample of fifty-one Dutch and fifty-one Moroccan adolescents living in a multi-ethnic context in The Netherlands. None of the three hypotheses on ethnic differences in connectedness with parents was completely confirmed, because the link between ethnicity and connectedness between parents was found to depend on age and gender of the adolescent. However, convergent with international research, the ethnic groups differed in respect of behavioural autonomy. Moroccan adolescents experienced less personal choice in comparison with their Dutch counterparts.
