Abstract

Voltage-gated potassium channels (KVs) are activated in response to changes in the electrical membrane potential by coupling a voltage-sensing module with K+ selective pore. Toxins targeting the channel pore can interfere with ion permeation by physically occluding the pore (‘plug mechanism’), by inducing a collapse of the selectivity filter (‘pore-collapse mechanism’), or by trapping the ions in ectopic sites formed at the toxin-channel interface (‘lid mechanism’) to induce a complete channel block.
