Abstract
CONGENITAL LOBAR EMPHYSEMA (CLE) is a common cause of severe respiratory distress in the first few months of life. The condition is characterized by air trapping and overdistention of a pulmonary lobe, concomitant compression of the adjacent lung tissue, and displacement of the mediastinum to the opposite side. The association of lobar emphysema with congenital heart disease (CHD) has been previously described. In the presence of CHD, the symptoms and signs of the underlying lung pathology are often overshadowed by the cardiac problems.
