Leadership and conflict management are essential skills that nursing students need to acquire and practise. There is a gap in the existing literature on conflict management strategies, the role of leadership styles in conflict management and the relationship between leadership and conflict management styles among nursing students. To investigate nursing students' leadership and conflict management styles and determine the relationship between their leadership and conflict management styles. A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 250 third-year and fourth-year students at a nursing college in Saudi Arabia. Participants completed the Leadership Styles Questionnaire and Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II. Descriptive statistics were used, and correlation and regression analyses were conducted. Overall, the democratic style of leadership and the integrating style of conflict management were the most favoured by participants, while the laissez-faire leadership style and the dominating style of conflict management were the least favoured. Significant positive correlations were established between the leadership styles of participants and their conflict management styles. The regression analysis showed a significant predictive power of leadership styles, specifically the democratic and autocratic styles, on 30% of the variance in conflict management styles. In recent years, conflict management has received significant attention in maintaining a positive and productive work environment where unresolved conflict can lead to a toxic culture, increased stress, and reduced job satisfaction among teachers. This review synthesizes findings from multiple studies to explore the influence of organizational culture, leadership style, communication norms, and power dynamics on conflict management strategies and outcomes in schools. The literature highlights the importance of effective communication, emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and collaborative practices in fostering a supportive work environment. Additionally, the role of organizational culture in either mitigating or exacerbating conflict is highlighted, with studies revealing that positive cultural attributes, such as inclusiveness and openness, increase the effectiveness of conflict resolution. This systematic study examines the critical role of conflict management in shaping the work culture of teachers in an educational environment. To achieve this goal, we conducted an extensive search of scholarly articles from reputable databases such as Scopus, Web of Science and Eric, focusing on studies published between 2020 and 2024. The study stream is based on the PRISMA framework. The database found (n=53) of the final primary data was analyzed. The findings of the study show that leadership style, organizational values and work environment are important in shaping conflict management practices, ultimately affecting the overall effectiveness of teachers' work culture in educational institutions. The review also identified gaps in the literature, particularly the need for more research in diverse educational contexts and the long term effects of leadership interventions on conflict management. The insights provided by this review have significant implications for policymakers, educators, and administrators who aim to foster constructive work cultures and improve educational outcomes.

This study highlights the importance of implementing human relations principles in creating a harmonious and productive work environment. Open communication, empathy, and constructive conflict management were found to be key factors in building positive work relationships between employees and managers. Employees who feel valued and listened to tend to be more engaged in their work, increasing motivation and morale, which ultimately impacts the performance of the team and the organization as a whole. In addition, effective conflict management can strengthen interpersonal relationships and create a work atmosphere that is more conducive to collaboration and innovation. This study also shows that poorly managed conflict can damage work relationships and reduce productivity. In such situations, a tense work environment can lower employee morale, increase turnover rates, and hinder the achievement of organizational goals. Therefore, organizations need to actively develop strategies that support clear and effective communication, as well as pay attention to employee emotional well-being. Building an inclusive work culture and providing constructive conflict resolution mechanisms are essential to maintaining the stability and sustainability of productivity in the long term.

Organisational conflict is an inevitable aspect of any workplace and understanding the different types of conflict while implementing effective strategies is crucial for promoting a healthy and productive work environment. This study aims to identify the types and strategies of organisational conflict management in Jordanian sports organisations, specifically in Amman, the capital. It will examine the perceptions of both board members and club presidents and analyse any significant variations in their views. The study employs a descriptive survey method, using a structured questionnaire to collect primary data. The research population comprises presidents and board members from 114 sports clubs registered with the Ministry of Youth, totalling 1 1,090 individuals. A random sampling technique is utilised to select a sample of 46 sports clubs, representing approximately 400 individuals. Out of the 400 questionnaires distributed, 290 responses were received, consisting of 46 club presidents and 244 board members. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The study finds agreement among sports club board members and presidents that intergroup conflict is the predominant type of conflict occurring in Jordanian sports clubs. Additionally, the results showed agreement between members and club presidents on choosing the cooperative strategy as the best possible approach to resolve organisational conflicts. However, the results indicate the existence of statistically significant differences in conflict management types and strategies between board members and club presidents. The observed differences can be attributed to their distinct roles and responsibilities within the club, as well as variations in their levels of experience. It is recommended that Jordanian sports clubs effectively manage conflicts by combining open communication, strengthening governance, inclusive decision-making processes, and a willingness to collaborate and compromise.

Advancing Workforce Skills, Safety, and Stability in High-Risk Sectors: A Nigerian Perspective on Predictive Maintenance and Conflict Management
  • Jan 1, 2025
  • European Journal of Business and Innovation Research
  • Austin Oshiobugie + 1 more

This research article investigates the convergence of predictive maintenance (PdM) and conflict management strategies as fundamental components for enhancing workforce safety, operational stability, and productivity in high-risk industries, with a particular emphasis on Nigeria's energy sector. The Nigerian energy industry faces multifaceted challenges, including aging infrastructure, frequent equipment breakdowns, and limited financial resources for technological advancement. These challenges are compounded by workforce dynamics that are often complex, with cultural diversity and economic pressures contributing to a higher likelihood of workplace conflicts. As such, a dual approach that combines PdM and conflict management strategies is proposed to address these critical issues.Predictive maintenance, a proactive maintenance methodology, utilizes data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Machine Learning (ML) to anticipate equipment failures before they occur. This minimizes unexpected downtimes, optimizes repair schedules, and significantly enhances both asset reliability and workforce safety. PdM is particularly pertinent to Nigeria's high-risk energy sector, where equipment failure not only disrupts productivity but also endangers workers and can lead to costly delays. Mathematical models, such as Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and uptime calculations, provide insights into optimizing PdM schedules and minimizing repair times, thereby improving overall operational uptime. These metrics offer a quantifiable framework for implementing PdM, ensuring that resources are allocated based on real-time equipment conditions and predicted maintenance needs, resulting in substantial cost savings and a more efficient use of resources.Conflict management, another essential strategy, is crucial in a sector where diverse teams collaborate under challenging and high-stakes conditions. In the Nigerian context, effective conflict management can mitigate the impacts of interpersonal disputes, misunderstandings, and stress factors that could otherwise compromise team productivity and safety. This study reviews various conflict management frameworks, including the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), which categorizes conflict responses into competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating. In high-risk sectors like energy, adopting conflict management strategies can enhance psychological safety, enabling employees to communicate openly, trust one another, and collaborate more effectively. This creates a safer and more productive work environment, where potential conflicts are handled constructively, fostering a cohesive team dynamic essential for operational stability. This article also presents mathematical models to guide the implementation of PdM and conflict management, optimizing each approach's effectiveness within Nigeria’s unique socio-economic landscape. For PdM, cost optimization models are introduced, balancing maintenance costs against failure rates to establish the most cost-effective repair intervals. Conflict management is analyzed through game theory, where payoff matrices illustrate possible outcomes based on cooperative or competitive interactions. These models provide actionable insights into balancing cost-effectiveness, safety, and team dynamics, empowering Nigeria’s energy sector to adopt innovative strategies for a more stable and resilient workforce. The integration of predictive maintenance and conflict management represents a transformative approach to addressing Nigeria’s energy sector challenges. By adopting these data-driven maintenance schedules and fostering a culture of constructive conflict resolution, Nigerian energy firms can mitigate risks, enhance safety, and achieve operational resilience. This dual strategy not only addresses immediate operational challenges but also builds a foundation for sustainable growth, improved productivity, and workforce development.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper was to examine age differences in conflict management strategy use, effectiveness and in exposure to customer stressors in service interactions.Design/methodology/approachModerated regression and mediation analyses were conducted to test hypotheses in a sample of 444 German service employees from different service branches with frequent customer contact.FindingsResults revealed that older service employees experienced fewer customer stressors. Customer stressors mediated the negative relationship between age and burnout. Age was associated with use of passive avoidant (avoiding) and active constructive (problem solving) conflict management strategies. Furthermore, older employees used those strategies more effectively. Especially when avoiding conflicts, older employees reported more professional efficacy than younger colleagues. In contrast, younger employees benefited considerably less from strategy use and reported higher levels of burnout in general. Thus, results suggest older employees’ effective conflict management and their positive perception of customer stressors contribute to lower levels of burnout.Practical implicationsResults speak against a general deficit model for older workers as they show specific strengths of older employees in social conflicts. Their expertise in dealing with negative social interactions represents an important resource for organizations and training interventions, such as mentoring programs.Originality/valueThis study is one of the first to examine age-related conflict management skills with regard to customer conflicts, employee health and effectiveness of strategy use. It replicates existing findings on age and conflict management and extends them in several ways thereby ruling out alternative explanations for age effects.

“To Know the Score” - A Critical Analysis on the Shift of Workplace Culture Created by the Pandemic and Its Influence on Conflict Management and Employee Morale in Corporates in South India
  • Jun 12, 2022
  • Proceedings of International Conference on Business Management
  • A.C Merlin Varsha + 1 more

The pandemic has made organisations abandon the fundamental working premises and has drastically altered the work culture affecting significant shifts in the workplace and subsequently influencing a redesigning of the organisational culture, conflict resolutions and management. The paper explores and critically examines the work conditions viewed from within the context of the global pandemic and discusses the relationship between the employees’ morale and the conflict crisis in manufacturing companies in South India with specific elaborations on the meaning of conflict management, workers’ morale, causes and effects of the shift in the workplace and conflict resolution. With specific reference to corporate organisations in Chennai and Bengaluru, the study analyses through a qualitative methodology how organisations get ravaged by one form of conflict or the other ranging from intrapersonal and group conflict, intra-organisational cultural conflict, constructive or functional conflict, dysfunctional or destructive conflicts. The survey indicated that conflicts occur in organisations as a result of incompatible goals, different values and beliefs, inconsistent evaluation, communication problems, negative power politics, authority, lack of leadership style, scarcity of common resources and organisational demands. It was also found that if conflicts are not appropriately and promptly managed, it can lead to truncated or reduced workers’ morale. The discussion leads to findings which indicate that the workplace as we know it is forever changed by the lockdowns owing to the pandemic. Management and leadership of organisations should begin to take steps to consider redesigning the workplace to readdress the working conditions with innovation and aim to develop better co-relationship between organisations and employees within the virtual platform. What are the ways in which employees’ morale can be positively uplifted during an organisational conflict on a virtual working mode? How do innovative digital operations improve the standard of an organisation? What may be the conflict resolutions that can bring about a positive shift in the workplace for the future owing to the phenomenal disruption caused by the Pandemic? These and other related questions will be raised and addressed in the course of the discussion. The study was initially intended for working employees as the target readership. The scope of this research may further be extended and can prove to be beneficial for further research on Human Resource and Management Studies.
