Abstract
Single crystal surfaces of the interconfiguration fluctuation material SmB 6 have been studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Comparison with data for LaB 6 allows a detailed analysis of the Sm 4 f-spectrum. It yields a Sm 2+/Sm 3+ valence ratio of 0.4, a Coulomb correlation correlation energy oif 7 eV, and a 1 eV broadening of the Sm 3+ 4 f spectrum
