Abstract

Advances in biotechnology (the term biotechnology is being used generally in this review but includes modern techniques of genetic engineering and genetic modification) have led to improved research approaches in areas such as increased disease resistance, improved livestock production, and increasingly refined diagnostic techniques, all of which have the potential to significantly improve overall animal health. New applications of animal biotechnology may soon be commercialised, but they must be of benefit to society and acceptable to the public. This issue of the OIE Scientific and Technical Review is devoted to the application of biotechnology to livestock and fish and to products that benefit animal health. It contains a comprehensive collection of reviews that discuss various techniques of modern biotechnology and significant animal health-related topics. It is difficult to overstate the progress that biotechnology may make in the field of animal health as new applications are expected to bring ever-increasing possibilities. This Review describes the status of the science, the application of available biotechnology techniques, and the opportunities that are arising as applied biotechnology opens new doors in the animal health field.
