Abstract

The author briefly reviews the development of the American philosophy of librarianship and identifies issues to be addressed in the next century. The focus of the essay is on the interpretation of bibliothecal communication defined as a dialogue between the reader and selected author within the structured library environment. Bibliothecal communication is considered the basic principle in the newly emerging concept of metalibrarianship which encompasses all aspects of recorded communication.
