Abstract

The influence of various flow conditions determined by flow velocities on the cavitation erosion of 1.4301 austenitic steel are presented. A linear correlation between the flow velocity and erosion rate has been obtained. Measurements of the surface roughness showed its linear increase with the exposure time and an increase in the erosion area with an increase in flow velocity. In-depth hardness measurements have proven the high ability of austenitic steel to strengthen the surface as a result of cavitation loads. A logarithmic relationship was observed between surface hardening and the maximum value of the Ra parameter. A formula was also proposed to estimate the mass loss of the tested steel on the basis of surface roughness measurements.
