Abstract

Abstract A physical motivation is provided for the existence of a multiple scattering representation of the concentration dependence of the hydrodynamics of polymer solutions and suspensions as well as an approximate effective medium solution of these equations. An explanation is provided of the origins of “hydrodynamic screening” in polymer solutions and suspensions. Particular applications to the calculation of the leading concentration dependence of polymer relaxation times and to a scaling theory derivation of the empirical Martin equation for the concentration dependence of the polymer viscosity are discussed.
