Abstract

In this page we present an efficient numerical model to compute an optimal strategy for secondary cooling in continuous casting of steel. This strategy must obey various criteria related to the final quality of the product. The main goal is to guarantee the total solidification of the moving strand at a fixed place called the soft reduction zone. This place corresponds to the prescribed time T which is needed for any cross-section of the strand to reach the soft reduction zone, starting from the mould, provided the casting speed is constant. The additional optimally criteria include the prescribed time evolution of the surface temperature, time evolution of the interface between the solid and liquid phase, minimization of the temperature gradients at the surface etc. Radically, symmetric problem for ID, 2D is considered.
