Abstract

A tool-setting station is described which uses a computer vision system to provide both position and tool shape information to the machine tool control computer. Performance tests are presented which show that both the positional repeatability of the system and the accuracy of the tool edge determination are about two micrometres (3σ). The algorithms used and the theoretical limitations of the method are discussed.
