Abstract
Three computer models simulating the motion of a plasma in both one and two dimensions were applied to the sheet or planar pinch. Both the relativistic regime, including retardation effects, and the non-relativistic regime were investigated. In all cases both electric and magnetic interactions were allowed. The sheet pinch was completely stable both to spreading and fast wave instabilities, but exhibited tearing-mode instabilities in the slow wave regime. Typically the tearing consisted of an initial breakup into multiple strands which subsequently underwent coalescence.
