Abstract
We describe prototype apparatus that has been constructed to perform the measurement of TL glow curves and beta irradiations for a suite of 24 samples under the control of a microprocessor-based interface system. It has been designed primarily for research use and has a simple command system that enables direct control of each function of the apparatus. Samples, located in an evacuable chamber, are selected for glow curve measurement or beta irradiation using a turnable and two lifting devices, all controlled using closed-loop servo motor drive systems. The operation of the motor drives, vacuum and gas-purge valves, monitoring of the status of devices, control of the heater servo and data acquisition are controlled by the interface, the relevant parameters for which are downloaded from an IBM PC. Glow curve data are stored with temperature and photon count information ondisc within the interface, freeing the use of the PC for the analysis of previously acquired data. Fourier analysis of glow curve data, besides providing a powerful analytical tool, is used to obtain significant compaction of data.
