Abstract

GILT is a European telematic project sponsored by the European Commission (COST 11-bis action). In this cooperative project organised by institutions from several European countries, computer-based message transfer and conference services are investigated. The key point of the project is the interconnection of existing local computer-based message system (CBMSs) by means of Open Systems architecture, services and protocols to provide one global message exchange/conference service. This project will use existing public data networks based on X.25 in the individual countries. A hierarchy of appropriate services and protocols (transport, session, presentation and application layer) has been set up, having taken into account latest ISO and CCITT standardisation efforts and results.
