Abstract

The current study tries to investigate gold extraction in a membrane extractor in unsteady mode. The model was successfully validated using experimental results. The results showed that the diffusive flux on the zone close to the membrane surface is dominant in the first minutes of extraction but later the convective flux is the main flux, particularly at the centre of the shell side. The extraction time of one hour was not ample to extract all gold from the aqueous solution when the volume of solutions was 2000 mL and 3000 mL. Finally, the change in feed flow rate in the range of 30–55 cm3/min did not have a significant influence on the gold extraction time. However, the outlet dimensionless concentration of gold after one hour was increased from 0.24 to 44 with the increase of feed flow rate from 30 cm3/min to 55 cm3/min.
