Abstract

Extensive work for fatigue crack closure using the finite element method has been conducted. It was concerned with the estimation of the K parameter as a forcing function in roughness-induced crack closure, assessment of methods for evaluating the closure stress intensity factors, and numerical modeling of crack closure. From the analyses, K parameter appears to be valid for representing the change of stress distribution due to crack closure. Also, it was shown that the strain energy release rate method, using the nodal release technique and work done by applied loads for strain energy, was clearly superior for calculating the closure stress intensity factor. In addition, a review for the characterization of crack tip stress fields has been made in terms of roughness dimension on the crack surface.
