Abstract

The Compound Semiconductor Week (CSW) was held in Santa Barbara, California, from June 28 to July 2, 2015. It followed the successful CSW 2014 in Montpellier, France and CSW 2013 in Kobe, Japan. Combining in a single event the 42nd International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors (ISCS 2015) and the 27th International Conferences on Indium Phosphide and Related Materials (IPRM 2015), CSW has become one of the premier forums for the dissemination of research findings on all aspects of compound semiconductors. The CSW 2015 plenary session featured four distinguished speakers: Prof. Shuji Nakamura, the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, with a talk on the Background Story and Development of High Efficiency Blue InGaN LEDs and Laser Diodes; Dr. Robert Chau, Senior Fellow at Intel Corporation, who discussed The Future of Digital Electronics and III–V Semiconductors; Prof. Nicolas Grandjean, from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who focused on III-Nitride Photonics: Opportunities and Challenges; and Dr. Fred Kish, Senior VP of Infinera, who presented his vision on Photonic Integrated Circuits for Optical Communications. The opening session was then followed by 24 invited talks, 169 contributed oral presentations, and 67 poster presentations. Also included in the technical program were two short courses. The first one on Power Electronics Beyond Silicon, organized by Prof. Srabanti Chowdhury, and the second on New Devices for Beyond-Moore Electronics, organized by Prof. Debdeep Jena. The conference also hosted a Rump Session on the Future of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Compound Semiconductors, chaired by Prof. Steven Denbaars. This issue of physica status solidi (b) features 12 of the most interesting papers presented at CSW 2015 on crystal growth of III–V semiconductors, nanostructures and advanced photonic technologies. We trust you will enjoy the papers and will join us in the next edition of CSW.
