Abstract
The composition and formulation for three research explosives having similarities to military explosives are described. The primary energetic ingredient in each is cyclotetramethylene-tetranitramine (HMX), whose particle size is limited to a range of 125–210 μm to reduce variations in shock reactivity and performance. The binder in each explosive is hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB). The first composition contains only these two components. Aluminum with a nominal particle size of 5 μm is incorporated into the second composition. The third composition contains ammonium perchlorate (AP) with a nominal particle size of 200 μm in addition to the aluminum. The explosives are designed with features to allow for comparisons in shock reactivity and performance and to elucidate the roles of HMX, Al, and AP.
