Abstract

This paper describes a theoretical study of the material complex permittivity in the ultra-wideband (UWB) communication frequency range. To characterize the transmission and reflection mechanism over the UWB frequency range, the frequency dependent permittivity must be taken into account. Therefore, an effective formulation is derived for the calculation of the material permittivity for the indoor environment. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss are studied at UWB communication frequency with different materials and thicknesses. This new formulation shows that the complex dielectric constant can be accurately determined with less computation time. The values of dielectric constant and dielectric loss are found to be reasonable.
