Abstract
Metal ion catalysis of the decarboxylation of oxaloacetic acid in aqueous solution can be ascribed to the formation of metal chelates. The thermodynamic stability of the chelates formed by the transition metal ions with oxaloacetic acid and with other keto-carboxylic acids is discussed and related to the catalytic power of the metal ions.
