Abstract

The fluorescence excited in a 139La atomic beam by a single-frequency dye laser in the region of 5930.6 Å has been examined with Doppler-free geometry. The two lines are separated by 0.07 Å, are entirely distinct, and 29 of the 30 hfs components are resolved. Computer fits to the observed hyperfine structure yield values for the dipole and quadrupole hfs constants of the upper 2F5/2,7/2 states.
