Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the competitiveness of beef exports in natura in Paraguay between 2005 to 2014. To this end, the Constant Market Share model was used, consisted of decomposition of the effects of growth, with the use of the UNContrade database. The results indicate that Paraguay has increased its share in the production and export of beef, which has as its most important destinations of cooled beef in natura Brazil, Lebanon and Chile, and frozen beef in natura to the Russian Federation, Israel and Angola. The Constant Market Share model showed that the country is competitive in the production and export of bovine beef in natura during the periods of analysis (2005 to 2014); it also takes advantage of global growth for the two by-products in the third period (2012 to 2014) in relation to the second one (2009 to 2011); however, the destinations were negative for the third period in relation to the second one. The international trade of beef has undergone changes over time, whether due to diseases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE); as well as by the impact of the economic crisis.
