Abstract

Alkali metal cation transport across porous polypropylene-supported liquid membranes containing a lipophilic crown ether carboxylic acid in a series of alkyl 2-nitrophenyl ethers has been studied. Both the efficiency and selectivity of cation transport are influenced by alkyl group variation in the membrane solvent. For homologous series of normal alkyl and isoalkyl 2-nitrophenyl ethers, the dielectric constant of the membrane solvent provides the best correlation with the cation transport rate. In terms of the efficiency and selectivity of cation transport, 2-nitrophenyl pentyl and hexyl ethers surpass 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether.
