Abstract

Brutian pine is one of the important commercial species for forest products industry of Turkey. In this study, compatible segmented taper and volume models were developed for Brutian pine stands in Burdur Region of Turkey. Max and Burkhart (1976) and Parresol et al. (1987) segmented taper and volume functions were used in this study. The proposed models generally performed better for whole tree and different sections of tree bole for taper and stem volume. The equation proposed by Max and Burkhart (1976) performed significantly better than Parresol et al. (1987) equation for this tree species. Average diameter prediction error was less than 2.3 cm and average volume error was less than 0.008 m3 in different points on bole. Model estimates compared, using an independent dataset, well to existing tree volume table and tree volume equation prediction errors for Brutian pine were found to be larger than those for the proposed volume models.
