Abstract

Work carried out at JRC—Ispra on the compatibility of potential structural materials with liquid breeders in thermonuclear fusion reactors is reviewed; this has been mainly focussed on trying to understand the mechanisms governing the corrosion phenomenon. The various subjects discussed include the compatibility of AISI 316, 304, CrMn steels and high Ni, FeCr alloys with pure lithium and lithium containing lithium hydride and the influence of these environments on their tensile properties. Furthermore, the effect of lithium on the structural stability, intergranular penetration and grain boundary precipitates of CrMn steels is described. Finally, data are given on the compatibility of AISI 316L with the lead rich, lithium lead eutectic and on the possibility of a liquid metal embrittlement effect.
