Abstract
Objective To compare treatment effect, complications and quality of life of laparoscopic and open surgery in therapy of elderly patients with rectal cancer over 70 years old. Methods Eighty elderly patients with rectal cancer from June 2013 to June 2014 were selected as the research objects, and were divided by random number table into the observation group and the control group, with 40 cases in each group. The observation group received laparoscopic surgery, and the control group received open surgery; length of incision, intraoperative blood loss, operation time, postoperative exhaust time, postoperative eating time, hospitalization time, quality of life, and complication rate in the two groups were compared. Results The length of incision in the observation group [(5.53±2.93) cm] was significantly shorter than that in the control group, the intraoperative blood loss [(121.34±63.76) ml] was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The postoperative exhaust time [(3.56±1.06) d], postoperative eating time [(4.34±1.13) d] and hospitalization time [(12.62±2.35) d] in the observation group were significantly shorter than those in the control group (P<0.05). The overall health, mental health, social function, physical function, psychological state and pain score in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The complication rate in the observation group (12.50%) was significantly lower than that in the control group (35.00%, P<0.05). Conclusions Treatment effect of laparoscopic surgery on elderly patients with rectal cancer over 70 years old is significant. This treatment can reduce intraoperative blood loss, shorten hospitalization time, improve patients’ quality of life, reduce complication rate, has a good clinical application and good security. Key words: Elderly; Rectal cancer; Laparoscope; Open surgery
