Abstract
Linguistic, look-say, and special alphabet approaches to teaching initial reading skills were compared among 814 beginning first grade children of equivalent readiness levels. Wide Range Achievement Test reading scores at the end of first grade showed a significant superiority of the special alphabet approach, with the linguistic approach also significantly more effective than the more traditional look-say procedure.
