Abstract
Illusion magnitude relationships between the Brentano Mueller-Lyer figure and its two component parts, the wings-in and the wings-out distortions, were explored in two experiments. Results indicated that the Brentano Mueller-Lyer form, a figural variant that combines both illusions, is related more closely to its underestimation rather than to its overestimation component. Data also supported the notion that a unique complement of perceptual mechanisms is involved in the formation of each Mueller-Lyer distortion
