Abstract

The sample used for the University at Buffalo Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center's Consumer Assessments Study (CAS) (n = 256) was compared with those in the 1986 NHIS (n = 27 million) and 1987 NMES (n = 28 million) studies. The samples were almost identical on race, but the CAS subjects were older, and it thus contains proportionately more women. The CAS represents that segment of the older population with difficulty in performing ADLs and/or IADLs—something less than 15% of elders.
