Abstract

1. 1. Surface membrane proteins on rhesus monkey and human erythrocytes were radiolabelled by lactoperoxidase catalyzed radioiodination and by pyridoxal phosphate/NaB 3H 4 treatment. 2. 2. Surface membrane sialoglycoproteins and glycoproteins were radiolabelled by periodate/NaB 3H 4 or galactose oxidase ± neuraminidase/NaB 3H 4 treatments. 3. 3. Labelled proteins were compared by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis on slab gels and autoradiography or fluorography. 4. 4. The patterns of labelled proteins were very similar with some differences noted. The patterns of labelled sialoglycoproteins and glycoproteins were strikingly homologous. This similarity in glycoprotein composition contrasts with major differences in glycoproteins of erythrocytes from several non-primates and human erythrocytes.
