Abstract

The inelastic differential cross-sections calculated by the distorted wave Born approximation and the strong coupling approximation are compared when the parameters of the distorting potentials are restricted by the requirement that the elastic scattering cross-sections are equivalent. For the reaction Ne 20(p,p′)Ne 20 it is found, contrary to the usual belief, that the DWBA underestimates the cross-section. It is also shown analytically that the DWBA and SCA are not necessarily equivalent.
