Abstract
A comparison of the collisional-excitation and -ionization rates used in statistical-equilibrium, model-atmosphere calculations by Mihalas is made with those used by Kalkofen and Strom. These rates are also compared with the earlier proposed rates of Seaton, van Regemorter, and Allen and rates recently proposed by Peterson based on the work of Burke, Ormonde, and Whitaker. The significance of differ- ences in rates and assumptions of Mihalas and those of Kalkofen and Strom on calculated departures from LTE is discussed. Some apparent inconsistencies between suggested ionization and excitation rates are considered. INTRODUCTIO
