Abstract

Presently, radar method and method of weighing wires are used to detect ice on power lines. Technology of radar sensing of power transmission line is described in paper. It is shown that the technology can reliably detect ice deposits on wires of overhead power transmission lines. The results of radar measurements in the presence of ice deposits on the operating overhead lines are described. The results of studies on the passage of rectangular pulses with varying duration in high frequency path of power lines are presented. The optimal duration of the pulses is defined. The results of the radar system of ice detection and weighing system of wires are compared. Their advantages and disadvantages are shown. It is found that the dynamics of growth of ice deposits on the wires have the same trends on all three phases of overhead power line. The study used experimental data and results of simulating high frequency path of overhead power lines.
