Abstract

In this paper, the comparison of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and its variants to optimal proportional-integral-derivative (PID) gains are presented. In addition to basic PSO (BPSO), many variants such as inertia weight approach (IWA), constriction factor approach (CFA) and dynamic PSO (DPSO) are applied respectively, and then the test results are investigated and their performances are evaluated. The digital simulation results show that PSO and its variants have stable convergence characteristic and good computational ability for optimal PID gains.
