Abstract

This paper introduces the characteristics of a novel single-stage power electronic transformer (PET) based on isolated modular multilevel converter (I-M2C). This new PET totally eliminates the individual DC-link capacitor in the traditional two-stage PET, which effectively reduces the number of the power electronic devices and the complexity of control strategy. It has the basic triple ports of low-voltage DC (LVDC), medium-voltage AC (MVAC) and medium-voltage DC (MVDC), which can realize the single-stage power conversion between MVDC/AC sides and LVDC side. Then, a comparison between I-M2C based PET and traditional PET based on modular multilevel converters (MMC) is given in aspects of topology, control strategy and cost, which verifies the advantages of I-M2C based PET. Finally, a three-phase 6kW scaled-down laboratory system is established to verify its effectiveness.
