Abstract

In this work, TiN, TiC and TiB2 coatings were fabricated by atmospheric plasma spray (APS) technique. The phase composition, microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the three kinds of coatings were investigated and compared in detail. The results showed that all the coatings were relatively homogenous with lamellar microstructure, while oxidation phenomenon occurred during the deposition processes. The TiN owned the highest oxygen content, while the TiB2 coating presented the highest roughness and porosity. The elastic modulus and hardness values of the TiC coating were about 189.7 ± 26.6 GPa and 7.7 ± 0.7 GPa, respectively, which were higher than those of the TiN and TiB2 coatings. The TiC coating exhibited the best tribological property with the lowest friction coefficients and wear rates under both low and high loads against WC-Co ball. The wear mechanisms of the three kinds of coatings were analyzed as well.
