Comparison of efficacy and safety of laparoscopic versus retropubic radical prostatectomy in the treatment of localized prostate cancer

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy and safety of radical prostatectomy by laparoscopic approach and retropubic approach in patients with localized prostate cancer. Methods Thirty-seven patients with localized prostate cancer treated in Zhengzhou People’s Hospital from January 2013 to June 2018 were divided into two groups according to different surgical approaches. Twenty-two cases in control group were treated by posterior pubic approach, and 15 cases in observation group were treated by laparoscopy. The perioperative indexes such as operation time, indwelling catheter time, hospitalization time, intraoperative bleeding volume and pain score were recorded and compared between the two groups. The incidence of complications such as urinary incontinence, anastomotic stricture, urinary leakage and erectile dysfunction in the two groups were higher than those of the two groups. Results After treatment, the observation group had shorter hospital stay compared with the control group, significantly reduced intraoperative bleeding, lower pain score, but longer operation time (P 0.05). Conclusions In the treatment of radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic approach can achieve the effect similar to that of the retropubic approach, and it has minimally invasive advantage, which is beneficial to the postoperative recovery of the patients.
