Abstract

This paper compares space-vector modulated direct (DMC) and indirect (IMC) matrix converters supplying induction motor drives. In an ideal case DMC and IMC provide similar performance with identical control system but in real motor drives some differences in output voltages and power losses occur. This is caused by different main circuits, whose effects are increased by different commutation methods needed to provide safe operation in both cases. Thus the output voltages of the converters do not follow their references similarly but the effects of non-idealities are more severe in the IMC than in the DMC. In addition, the efficiency of the IMC is smaller than the efficiency of the DMC under most loading situations tested.
