Abstract

Abstract A cavitation erosion test of 0Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel and 45 steel sample was performed in an ultrasonic vibration apparatus. The cavitation erosion behavior was studied by means of metallographic microscope, Vickers hardness test, scanning electron microscopy and mass loss analysis. The results showed that the surface hardness had an obvious influence on cavitation erosion, the higher the hardness, the better the cavitation erosion resistance was. Plastic deformation and fatigue fracture were the main mechanics of cavitation erosion of 0Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel, whereas cavitation erosion of 45 steel was accompanied by oxidation, which will intensify cavitation erosion. Reasonable surface modification technology should be adopted for 0Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel to improve surface hardness, and suitable surface protection technology must be used to resist cavitation erosion and oxidation for 45 steel under cavitation conditions.
